A nice open source package for Windows and *nix is nmap.

It&#039;s a GUI port scanner, nice for a sys admin like me to check for vulnerabilities on the LAN, or from home to check how well I&#039;ve configured our firewall/router.

I&#039;d mention some nice free, (as in beer), software for Windows that isn&#039;t open source, but that would be off topic ;)</description>
